Voice Channels

Voice channel automation is what makes the bot feel effortless. Members get a correctly-sized, well-named group voice channel with zero manual setup, and channels clean themselves up when the session ends.

Voice channels are optional

A group doesn't have to live in a voice channel. If an LFG channel has Use Group Chat Thread enabled, groups can instead coordinate in a private thread — see Group Chat Type. Turning Use Discord Voice Chat off for a channel removes its Voice Creator entirely and makes that channel thread-only.

How group voice channels are created

There are two ways a group voice channel comes into being:

Join-to-Create

Joining a designated voice creator channel ("Join to Create") instantly spawns a fresh group voice channel for that player — named from their chosen filters, with the right user limit, in the correct category. If the creator channel serves multiple games, the player gets a quick game-picker prompt first.

Auto-LFG channels

Any voice channel in the same category as that game's voice creator channel (except channels with a user limit of 1) is automatically treated as a group voice channel. No special action needed — drop members into the category and the bot manages the rest.

Two rules decide what counts:

  • The voice creator channel is what marks the category. An LFG text channel sitting in a category is not enough on its own — move the voice creator channel into a category to make that category's voice channels Auto-LFG.
  • Channels outside any category are never auto-detected. A voice channel at the root of the server (not under a category) will not start LFG when someone joins it.

Members in a voice channel that isn't auto-detected aren't stuck: they can post a message in the LFG channel and LFG starts automatically for the voice channel they're sitting in.

Channel ownership

  • The first real member of a channel becomes the owner (shown with a crown).
  • If the owner leaves, ownership transfers to another member after a short countdown, and members are notified.
  • Owners can kick a member; kicked users are blocked from rejoining that group. Moderator roles are protected from being kicked.

Live member management

As players come and go, the bot keeps the public LFG message in sync:

  • When a group fills, it locks and stops broadcasting.
  • If someone leaves a full group that wanted more players, it resumes searching automatically.

Cleanup

  • Empty temporary group voice channels are deleted after a timeout, so the server doesn't accumulate dead channels.
  • On startup, the bot reconciles stale channels and removes records for channels that no longer exist.

Permanent voice channels

Standing community voice channels are supported. A permanent VC is not deleted when it empties — instead its group record resets for the next group, preserving the channel itself. This is useful for a "main hangout" voice room that should always exist.

A permanent VC also keeps its own name for as long as a group runs in it. It belongs to the server (or to the member who made it), not to the group, so the bot never renames it — the group's game, filters and progress are shown in the channel's voice status and in the LFG post instead. Its user limit still follows the group size while searching, so the players being looked for can actually get in, and the original limit is restored when the group ends.

Channels become permanent VCs in two ways:

  • Auto-detected — an existing voice channel in the voice creator's category that a member joins.
  • Adopted — a member posts in the LFG channel while sitting in their own voice channel, and the bot starts a group in that channel.

Naming and categories

Server owners control:

  • Name pattern — the template used for auto-created channel names (set in /setup-lfg-channel).
  • Categories — separate categories for "searching" groups and groups that are "on a mission," so the channel list stays organized.

Music bots

When enabled, known music bots can join group voice channels without counting as players, and an optional "Play Music" button appears when a music bot is present.

Premium voice controls

A few advanced controls — transfer ownership, lock/unlock the channel, and remove or raise the user limit — can be gated behind Premium. When gating is off, they're free for everyone.
